From Grassroots to Political Authority: Amplifying Women’s Voices in Sierra Leone

We were delighted to attend From Grassroots to Political Authority: Amplifying Women’s Voices in Sierra Leone presentation and panel talk at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London on Monday 9th March 2026. The event brought together researchers, practitioners, members of the Sierra Leone diaspora and supporters of MMW to explore how grassroots women leaders are shaping public discourse and influencing political spaces through community organising and creative media.

Our Executive Director, Florence Sesay delivered an inspiring and powerful presentation of her new research, drawing on more than two decades of experience in journalism and women’s rights advocacy. Her work highlighted the leadership of women across Sierra Leone who are driving change within their communities, building alliances, challenging inequality, and amplifying feminist agendas in innovative and impactful ways. Florence’s presentation captured both the depth of community leadership and the importance of recognising grassroots expertise within national and global conversations.

The panel discussion with Florence Sesay and Katharina Samara-Wickrama led by The Hon. Julia Gillard AC created a rich and engaging dialogue, offering thoughtful reflections on the relationship between grassroots activism and political authority, the role of media in shaping narratives, and the importance of sustained investment in women-led movements. The conversation sparked meaningful exchanges between speakers and audience members, reinforcing the value of bringing together academia, civil society, and community voices.

We extend our sincere thanks to King’s College London for hosting and organising this important event, and to everyone who joined us in person and online. Your participation, questions, and insights helped make the evening both energising and impactful.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and working together to amplify women’s voices and leadership in Sierra Leone and beyond.
