Number of women trained by MMW to be peace ambassadors during the 2023 elections

Media Matters for Women puts local people at the center of social change. Building social networks strengthens communities. Our communication network across rural Sierra Leone amplifies the visibility, appeal and reach of women’s rights agendas and the role of women’s movements in advancing democracy and justice. Our aim is to achieve gender equality by engaging and empowering rural women and girls to actively take part in a women’s movement that begins in their villages and spreads across the country.

MMW cannot do this work alone. That’s why we collaborate with key stakeholders including traditional and religious leaders, local health service providers, community service organizations and government ministries.

Our election-focused work increases the number of female voters and provides critical information for all voters about their voting rights and the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) law of 2023. We trained more than 150 women as peacebuilding ambassadors and engaged with 24 chiefdoms across rural Sierra Leone to reinforce messages of peace leading to the national elections in June 2023.
