International Day of the Girl Child, October 11

Every year on October 11th, the world comes together to recognise the rights of girls and the unique challenges they face. The International Day of the Girl Child is more than just a date; it is a powerful reminder of the untapped potential of every girl and the urgent need to create an environment where they can thrive.

This year, the Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs, in collaboration with local and international partners, marked the day with a series of events, campaigns, community engagements, radio dissuasion, and a symposium under the global theme: “The Girl I am The Change I Lead”.

A Day of Voices, Visions, and Victory

From the capital city to the remote rural communities, October 11 was filled with vibrant celebrations led by girls themselves. The day began with a national forum hosted by the Ministry. Young girls took center stage, sharing their stories in the form of drama skits, jingles, and songs. These stories demanded a more inclusive, equal, and safe society.

Key officials from the Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs emphasised the Government’s commitment to advancing policy that protects and empowers girls, improving access to Education and health care, and ending harmful practices like child marriage and gender-based violence.

Partnering for impact

This year’s celebration saw strong collaboration between the Ministry and partners, both local and international. These efforts reflect a shared vision: a world where every girl is free to reach her full potential.

Girls Leading the Change

One of the most inspiring moments of the day came during the “Girls Take Over” campaign. In this campaign, girls assumed leadership in their drama skits. These symbolic acts sent a strong message: girls are not just the future, they are the present.

Looking Ahead

As the celebrations ended, the message was clear: October 11th is not a one-day event; it’s a call to action. The Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs, with the support of partners and communities, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every girl is valued, protected, and empowered.

In a world that still too often overlooks girls, this day reminds us of the power of girls, their resilience, and their right to shine.
