Paris Peace Forum Honors MMW Fish Farm

Media Matters for Women’s Kamalenka Fish Farm project has been selected by the Paris Peace Forum committee to be showcased at its upcoming conference in November. MMW Senior Journalist Alinah Kallon, who has led the development of this fish farm, will be attending the forum with the support of three international team members.

Media Matters for Women has worked for two years to build and develop several fish ponds in Kamalenka, a remote and highly impoverished village in northwest Sierra Leone. This beneficiary-led project has created livelihood opportunities for local women, improved understanding of basic rights, and provided access to a new protein source in an area where the lack of protein is the leading cause of malnutrition.

MMW’s community-based fish farming project was designed and implemented with technical support from the Foundation for Rural Development and funding from the World Bank. The involvement of key local stakeholders, government ministers, and traditional and religious leaders has been critical to the project’s sustainability. Local women led the training, administration and procurement activities. The project concluded this year with three working fish ponds and 35 well-trained female fish farmers.
